Services for LaVerne Hancock, 87, of Lubbock will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Ford Memorial Chapel at First Baptist Church with the Rev. John Ballard officiating.

Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home in Lubbock.

She died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003.

She was born Aug. 26, 1915, in Newcastle and graduated in 1936 from J.P. Pennington High School in Blountsville, Ala. She attended Texas Tech. She married Dee Hancock on July 3, 1938, in Post. She was an educator for 33 years in Lubbock area schools.

She began her teaching career in 1940 at New Home prior to completing a bachelor's degree from Tech in 1947 and a master's degree in 1954. She taught at schools in Union, Pettit and Shallowater before moving to Lubbock in 1954. She retired in 1976 after teaching English for three years at O.L. Slaton and J.T. Hutchison Junior High schools and 19 years at Lubbock High School.

She was a member of First Baptist Church for nearly 50 years and served as a member and officer of the Belle Glade Garden Club for 20 years.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Sue Jones of Lubbock and Carolyn Andres of Dallas; and four grandchildren.
