Harold Ellis, 92, of Scottsbluff, died Sunday, January 22, 2006, at the Western Nebraska Veterans Home. A memorial service will be 10:00 A.M., Saturday, February 4, 2006, at Western Nebraska Veterans Home Chapel, Scottsbluff with Pastor Ed Hunzeker officiating. Inurnment will be in the Veterans Section of Fairview Cemetery, Scottsbluff with military honors provided by the Nebraska National Guard.
Harold was born July 21, 1913, in Craig, Nebraska to Floyd L. and Elizabeth J. (Claypool) Ellis. He graduated from the Scottsbluff High School in May 1931. While in school he was in the National Honors Society, the Echoes Staff and played football with the hefty weight of 115 pounds. He also won the state championships in bookkeeping and spelling. He worked as a paper carrier for the Star-Herald for many years. Harold was one of those who was drafted for a-year-and-a-day, which turned out to be over four years. While in the army he served in Alaska with the Coastal Artillery, then was retrained in the Field Artillery and was sent to Italy where he took part in many battles. Harold was employed at Scottsbluff Post Office for 42 years; first at Mail Carrier then as Mail Clerk. Survivors include his sisters, Blanche M. Thorusen of Kuna, Idaho and Elizabeth M. Dean of Western Nebraska Veterans Home, Scottsbluff; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Ellis of Scottsbluff; six nieces; and seven nephews. His parents; four brothers, Leonard, Ivan, Vinton and Loren; and one sister, Maravene I. Davies, preceded him in death.
