05/25/1923 - 2/3/2008
The life of Elizabeth Mae Dean nee Ellis in this universe came to an end on Sunday, February 3, 2008, at the Nebraska Western Veterans Home, Scottsbluff, NE, her home since 2003. Two sons, Thomas R. Dean, Wethersfield, CT, and Robert L. Dean and daughter-in-law, Deborah Freeman Dean, Brighton, MI, survive her, together with five grandchildren: Sarah Elizabeth Dean-Bracken, Manchester, CT, Aaron T. Dean, Axtell, NE, Ian Dean, Colin Dean and Tristin Dean, all of Brighton, MI. She is also survived by her sister, Blanche Thorusen, of Kuna, ID, plus, four great grandchildren: Audrey M. Sweeney, Joseph D. Sweeney, Christian J. Sweeney, Philip A. Sweeney, all of Manchester, CT, together with numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Known to her numerous friends as "Mae", Ms. Dean was a native of Scottsbluff, born to Elizabeth J. Claypool Ellis and Floyd L. Ellis in 1923. Her parents, along with five brothers and one sister, predeceased her.* Following the example of four of her brothers, Mae left Scottsbluff to serve her country in 1944. She enlisted in the U.S. Navy, becoming a veteran of the Second World War. After the War, Mae accompanied her husband, Darius A. Dean, whom she had met while both served in the Armed Forces, to Louisiana where the couple established their first home. Mr. Dean died in 2002.

Mae was a distinguished teacher. She completed her masters and earned several advanced certificates specializing in elementary education with an emphasis in remedial reading skills. She taught 36 years before retiring in 1988, primarily in the states of Arkansas and Louisiana, but her career included service for Scottsbluff Public Schools at Bryant Elementary between 1959 and 1966. She was a member of the National Education Association, and was recognized in the Who's Who of American Education. She was recognized for influencing and enriching the lives of thousands of school children.

Upon retirement, appealing to her interest in history and an American ancestry traced back to the English colonies of the seventeenth century, Mae joined and was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution. She also joined the women's Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Among her many interests, Mae loved music. She sang in the choirs of several churches she attended, the latest the choir of the Blanchard United Methodist Church, Blanchard, LA, until her return to Scottsbluff in 2003.

Prior to the Second World War Mae was baptized in the First Christian Church, Scottsbluff, where her parents were members of the congregation throughout their lives. Her Christian faith remained of top importance to her to the end. Mae's faith was not doctrinaire. She believed a Christian life is based on the content of one's character, the substance of one's actions, not adherence to particular doctrine and dogma. Her generosity, spirit of sacrifice, courage in facing adversity, pain and mortality, with compassion and love for others, exemplified the finest tenets of the Faith.

She attended churches of various denominations within the locales where her family settled. Before her return to Scottsbluff she joined and attended the Blanchard, LA, United Methodist Church. When she came back to Scottsbluff, she initially attended the First Christian Church, and in her final years, chapel services at the Western Nebraska Veterans Home.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate her life and contributions is tentatively planned for May 25, 2008, her 85th birthday, with interment of her ashes will be at Fairview Cemetery with military honors.

*Predeceased siblings, in declining order from most recent: Brothers - Loren Ellis; Harold V. Ellis; Vinton Ellis; Ivan D. Ellis; Leonard Ellis. Sister - Maravene Davies.
Memorials in honor of her life may be made to the charity of the donor's choice in Mae's name.
