Amanda Becker, the oldest daughter of George's sister Sarah Ann, was a student of his for seven years until she was fourteen years of age. The subjects he taught were reading, writing, arithmetic and spelling.

George was badly wounded at the Battle of Wilson Creek. He was being loaded with the dead when someone saw him move. A woman in the vicinity cared for him until he could go on. He continued serving the Confederacy until he died at the Battle of Pea Ridge. "
