Gertrud was born in a village about 14.5 miles southwest of Fulda called Fleiden. At the age of 24 she married Josef Spiegel in Frauenberg, Fulda, Germany at the monastery church (Kloster Frauenberg) on 7 Sept 1737. After their marriage, they moved to the hamlet of Wölf located a short distance from the market village of Eiterfeld. Together they had five children: Flora, Theresia, Antonia, Joseph and Wilhelm. Four of her children lived to adulthood and eventually immigrated to America. Her youngest, Wilhelm, died short of four months old.
In 1847, her husband died leaving Gertrude a widow at the age of 34 with four young children to raise ranging in age from 2 to 9 years. She never remarried and according to her death record, remained "By means of a pious soul, a respectable widow for 36 years."
Gertrude died at the age of 70.
