LANKER SUFFOCATES IN APARTMENT FIRE

William Lanker, retired laborer, who would have been 82-years-old Friday, was found suffocated on a bed in his second-floor apartmen in the Dible Block at about 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 20, 1954. The body was discovered by Carey firemen who were summoned to extinguish a blaze that evidently originated from an overheated coal stove in the adjoining room of his apartment.

Wyandot County Corner B. H. Hathaway, who investigated, gave the ruling of suffocation.

The fire was discovered by Miss Hilda Jacob who noticed smoke escaping from around the windows and from beneath the roof, as she was driving from Worello Street into Glen Avenue.

A cot beside the heating stove was destroyed and there was extensive damage to the floor and ceiling in the one room. Firemen worked for about two hours to stop the spread of flames along the rafters.

The extent of the loss hand not been determined Tuesday. In other parts of the building it was limited mostly to smoke damage. Water damage to stock in the Bernard Furniture Store on the first floor was negligible.

Mr. Lanker was born Dec. 24, 1872, northeast of Carey, to William Henry and Mary Jane (Lowmaaster) Lanker and spent his life-time in Carey and the community.

He is survived by four children: Ralph of Indianapolis, Mrs. Bernard Jacob of Carey, Miss Mayme Lanker of Marion and Mrs. E. R. Lentz of Lancaster; 8 grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. William Sammet of W. North Street, Mrs. Charles Bloom of Fostoria, Mrs. Ira Lanker of Arcadia, Perry Lanker of Bridgeport, Ill.; Mrs. George Turner, southeast of Carey, and Mrs. Ada Adelsperger of Union City, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Lettie Ackerman; a son Gail and 6 brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Bristoll Funeral Home at 2:30 o'clock this Thursday afternoon, Dr. T. Benton Perry of Christ Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.
