Rev. John Alter, Jr was the son of John and Helenor (Sheetz) Alter, Sr. Charity (Vanarsdale) Alter was his 1st wife. They were married April 4, 1822. Charity died March 1, 1835. Lucinda J. (Black) Alter was his 2nd wife. They were married September 23, 1843. Lucinda died in 1847. Mary Ann (Chamberlain) Alter was his 3rd wife. They were married January 4, 1849. Mary died March 22, 1889. Rev. Alter organized the first Methodist Protestant Church at Carpenter's Grove in Jasper County.
