Joseph Sedlacek Buried Here Friday
Was Veteran of the Balkan Wars
Joseph Sedlacek, youngest child of Francis and Victoria Sedlacek, was born July 13th, 1863 near Brunn, Moravia, Czechoslovakia. In early youth he was confirmed in the Reformed Evangelical church of his country but later became affiliated with the First Presbyterian church where he was an untiring worker. His four brothers and only sister preceded him in death.
He was educated in the academic, agricultural, and music schools of his native country and was recognized as a musician and band leader of note at the time.
Mr. Sedlacek served for 14 years in the infantry of the 99th regiment during the reign of the late Emperor Francis Joseph of Austria and engaged in numerous battles with the Balkan states. He held the rank of officer and was also a member of the military band.
When he retired from military service to become a private citizen and farmer he taught music and organized a band. He traveled extensively abroad and in America, making many interesting and notable acquaintances and friends.
Mr. Sedlacek was united in marriage to Anna Svoboda. To this union were born four daughters and three sons, all of whom were frequently at his bedside during his fatal illness.
In 1906 Mr. Sedlacek immigrated to the United States and with his family resided on a farm near Waterville and Blue Rapids, Kans. for about 12 years. In 1918 he moved to Pender where he resided until February 4, 1932, when he suffered a stroke. Since then he has made his home with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Stammer of Wisner, where every effort was made to recover his normal health and to make him comfortable and happy.
Mr. Sedlacek passed away Tuesday, April 27, 1937, at the age of 73 years, 9 months and 14 days.
Those left to mourn his loss are his children: Vladimir of Lincoln, Joseph, Jr., of Morse Bluff, Mrs. John Stammer, Bessie, of Wisner; Mrs. Lloyd Grothe, Mildred, of Tekamah, Mrs. Gerald Valder, Anne Josephine, Tekamah, Miss Christine, teacher of 7th and 8th grades and music in Osmond schools, and Frank of Wisner.
The funeral services for Joseph Sedlacek, former Pender resident, were held Friday at the Congregational church in Wisner, with Rev. Homer W. Cox officiating.
Interment was made at the Rose Hill cemetery at Pender, in the family plot.
