Prentice Champlain, son of Obadiah Clark Champlain and Tabitha Dorcas Prentice, was born at North Hero (Grand Isle County) Vermont on March 14, 1823 and died, the result of a railroad accident, at Ingalls, Indiana on January 29, 1896.
The surname was originally "Champlin" but his grandfather (Paul Champlin) began the tradition of spelling it "Champlain".
