Alfred entered the service of the Civil War May 2, 1864 in Camp Cleveland, Ohio. Was discharged September 9, 1864 in Camp Cleveland, Ohio as a Pvt. His first wife, Amelia Uhl died Feb 26, 1889 age 47 years 11 months and 21 days. He married 2nd in 1891 to Mary Hekel, widow of Julius Hekel.
