A trip to Arthur to exchange Christmas gifts ended in tragedy for a Carmi family of six late Friday night.

Dead as the result of a two-car crash on Illinois 33, one half mile west of the Jasper County Line in Effingham County, is VernonHigginson, 37, of Carmi.

The Higginson family was returning to Carmi after exchanging gifts at the Jesse Higginson home in Arthur.

The auto driven by Higginson was eastbound, state police said, and the other car was westbound. The accident was described as a semi-head-on collision.

The body was taken to the Wright Funeral Home in Dieterich, then transferred to Sturm Funeral Home at Grayville.

Mr. Higginson was born in Cowling, and married Lula Clark. He was a veteran of the Korean War.

He leaves his wife; daughter, Teresa; son Vernon Jr., both at home; stepsons John and James Wolf, both at home; and a brother, Jesse R. of Arthur.

He also leaves four sisters, Mrs. Thelma Compton, Francisville; Mrs. Doris Hull, Friendsville; Mrs. Carol Wilson, Medina, Ohio; and Mrs. Retta Dunlap, Evansville, Ind.

Funeral services will be at Sturm Funeral Home in Grayville. Burial will be in Antioch Cemetery near Cowling. Friends may call at the
funeral home.
