Mrs. Margaret Beede, Pioneer Of Antioch, Dies

"Antioch, Dec 22 - Mrs. Margaret Ellen Beede, 85, pioneer eastern Contra Costa county resident and once teacher in the now ghost mining town of Nortonville, died at her home here yesterday afternoon. She had resided in California 83 years, accompanying her parents from her native Baton Rouge, LA, across the Isthmus of Panama, when she was two years of age.

With her family, Mrs. Beede resided as a young girl at the now famous ghost gold mining town of Columbia, near Sonora. When her parents moved to Contra Costa County, she was sent to San Francisco to obtain her schooling. At 15 years she became a teacher in the Nortonville School, continuing there until her marriage in 1872 to Henry F. Beede, founder of the Antioch Lumber Company. They observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1922, Beede died in 1926.

Mrs. Beede, always an active figure in community, lodge and business affairs also took a great interest in politics and philanthropic work. She was a charter member of the Antioch Lodge of Eastern Star and Woman's Club and was an active member of the Congregational Church.

She was for many years a director of the Antioch Lumber Company and had large property interests here.

Surviving are five sons, four daughters, 15 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The sons and a nephew, Albert Beede, will be pallbearers at her funeral. Services will be held Thursday at 2 o'clock from her late residence, which she occupied for 48 years. Rev. Thomas Griffin of Oakland, an old friend of the family, will officiate and will be assisted by Rev. William Steininger of Antioch.

Burial will be in the Antioch Cemetery.

Her sons are Harry, Charles, Ralph and Frank Beede of Antioch and Leroy Beede, manager of the American Trust Company's bank at Martinez. The daughters are Mrs. Mary Hobson and Mrs. Ellen Kelley of Antioch, Mrs. Olive Davis of Berkeley and Mrs. Romona Courtner of Oakland.

Her death followed an illness of eight weeks."
