East Contra Costa Mourns Passing of Henry Fuller Beede
"Eastern Contra Costa county is in mourning today, grieving with the sorrowing widow and sons and daughters for one who was a friend to all, the confidante of many, honored, respected and esteemed, who by his life works and deeds can be truly called a "first citizen."
For Henry F. Beede has passes on to join the great Silent Majority in that haven of rest whence mortal man ne'er returns. In the fullness of time, at the good old age of 75 years, Mr. Beede laid down his burden as a new day dawned, and peacefully passed into that last long sleep, to continue through all eternity.
Throughout the length and breadth of Contra Costa county, as the wires quickly spread the sad tidings of Henry Beede's death, genuine sorrow was expressed by hundreds. By reason of his many years of participation in the active business and community life of Antioch, his home had been established for more than a half a century, he was well known throughout the county, but particularly in his loss keenly felt in the great Eastern Contra Costa empire in the upbuilding and development of which he was a prime factor and in which reside hundred of successful ranchers and businessmen who proudly claim Henry Beede for their friend and wise counselor and who admittedly owe their position and success to a helping hand held out by him at some point in their career.
And to make more poignant the grief of the members of the family is the fact that had Mr. Beede survived but two more days , until after Wednesday, he would have passed the fifty-forth anniversary of his marriage, an event that he and Mrs. Beede have been anticipating with keen pleasure for weeks. But such was not to be, for an All-wise Supreme power had decreed that he had lived his life and that te appointed day had come.
Active as he was in business, up to the very day he was stricken with his last illness, Mr. Beede's death creates a void which will be difficult of filling. In all movements that were for the advancement of the community, , he was always an active worker, giving of his time and money without stint to promote the general good of all. President of the Bank of Antioch, , president of the Antioch Lumber Company, both among the largest commercials institutions of eastern Contra Costa, Mt. Beede was all interested in other business enterprises in the administration in which his guiding will be sorely missed.

During the years that followed numerous changes took place in the firm until Mr. Beede finally organized the Antioch Lumber Company, which he managed and later became practically the sole owner.
On April 14, 1872 Mr. Beede married Miss Margaret Ellen McNulty, who survives him together with nine sons and daughters, and sixteen grandchildren. Members of the immediate family are Harry McN (McNulty) Beede, Charles Beede, Mrs. Mary Rapp, Ralph Beede and Mrs. Roy V. Davis of Antioch, Leroy W. Beede of Martinez; Mrs. W. J. Kelly of San Francisco and Mrs. Ewell Cortner and Frank R. Beede of Oakland.
To the active interest of Mr. Beede is largely attributed the entrance of the Santa Fe railway into Antioch for he and J. P. Abbott were the principal owners of the waterfront lands which the railroad desired for its line and their deeding of rights of way and warehouses to the A. T. S. F. made the building of the road in its present favorable position, possible. Mr. Beede was a past master of Antioch Lodge No. 175 F. & A. M., a member of the Royal Arch Chapter and the Order of Eastern Star.
The remains were removed Tuesday morning to the Preston parlors in Antioch where they will lie until Thursday afternoon where they will be taken back to the family home for the solemnization of the last rights of which hundreds will pay their respects to the memory of a good man. Services will be conducted according to the ritual of the Masonic order and interment will be made in the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery at Antioch.
One of Contra Costa's most highly esteemed and best beloved citizens is no more, but though he is no longer with those who knew him best, Henry Beede's family and friends take solace in the thought that the good man and true whom they knew and whose virtues were many fold has gone to his reward and with whose passing it might be truly said Well done, thou good and faithful servant."
