HARRY BRAXTON IS SLAIN WITH AN ICEPICK

With an icepick piercing his heart, Harry Braxton, 30, walked downstairs in the Delk building on Main Street to a store on the bottom floor where he died a few minutes later. The stabbing occurred about 3 AM Saturday in the apartment of Basil H Rutland, who was ordered held on a charge of murder by the coronor's jury.

The remains of Braxton were interred Sunday afternoon at South End Cemetery, the funeral services being conducted by the Rev H D Inabinett, pastor of South Side Methodist Church.

The inquest was held Saturday afternoon by Magistrate C B Free. Testimony indicated that a party of men were engaged in a poker game in Rutland's apartment in the Delk building. Braxton and Rutland became involved in an argument over a 20 cent pot during the game, it is said, and had a fight in which blows were exchanged. It was said that Braxton left after this, but returned to get his hat, when the quarrel was renewed. During the altercation, Braxton fell, and some of his companions lifted him to his feet and escorted him downstairs to the store operated by his brother, Toy Braxton where he died soon afterward. When his body was examined, it was found that an ice pick was still sticking in his heart and it was pulled out by his brother. Rutland suffered an injury on his head.

Braxton was married and is survived by his widow, Mrs Deniza Worsham Braxton, and one son [Harry Braxton, Sr], four years old. He is also survived by two brothers, Toy Braxton, of Bamberg, and Hayward Braxton of Gainesville, Georgia; two sisters, Mrs Ed Drawdy and Mrs Fred Drawdy, of Bamberg, and his parents, Mr and Mrs Luther Braxton of Bamberg.

Rutland was arrested and placed in the county jail, where he is being held for trial.

Braxton and Rutland both worked in the local cotton mill. Rutland is married but has no children.
