Funeral Rites In Memory of Mrs. Goddard
The funeral services for Mrs. Samantha Goddard were held at the home a mile and a half west of Saluda on Wednesady afternoon at 2 o’clock. The Rev. Enselman of Abingdon conducted the services. The hymns, “Rock of Ages,” “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Jesus, Savior Pilot Me” were beautifully sung by L. E. Cutler, George Dawdy, Otis Williamson and James Ground. The pallbearers were Charles Williamson, John Maxwell, Warren Williamson, Ross Dunlevy, L. E. Cutler, and J. A. Newkirk. Mrs. Goddard was an old resident of the Warren neighborhood. She attended the Lincoln-Douglas debate at Galesburn in 1858. When her husband was stationed at Clarksville, Tenn., in 1863 with his regiment, the 83rd Illinois, she visited him for several weeks. The memory of this visit remained vivid through all the years.
Samantha Sigman Goddard, daughter of Isaac and Julia Sigman, was born January 29, 1842 at Cambridge, Guernsey county, Ohio. She came with her parents to Illinois in 1856, locating in Warren county, in the Cherry Park neighborhood. She made this her home until her marriage to James Goddard on July 4, 1861. She then moved to Knox county in the Warren neighborhood where she lived until her death, February 4, 1929, aged 87 years and 6 days. She is survived by her husband, James Goddard and one son, James G. Goddard of Los Angeles, Calif. Another son, Arthur, preceded her in death in 1920. There are seven grandchildren.
