Decatur County }

on this 24th day of october 1832 personally appeared in open court before the Honerable Judges of the Decatur Circuit court in and for said county of Decatur now sitting Benjamin Gosnell a resident of Decatur County State of Indiana aged seventy one years the 15th day of March 1832 who first being duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of congress pased June 7th 1832

That he entered by Draft the service of the united States under the command of Colonel Charles Linch [sic: Charles Lynch] in the company comanded by Captain James Adams and was stationed at the lead mines on New River [near Fort Chiswell] served three Months and was discharge by Col Charles Linch

of the virginia line [sic: Bedford County Militia] That he volunteered in the united states service in march the year 1781 under the comand of Colonel Charles Linch in the Company comanded by William Jones Captain and Marched from Bedford county, Virginia through Hillsborough [NC] on to Guilford Courthouse and was in the battle fought at that place [15 Mar] and Captain Jones was killed at that place and after the battle marched to the Iron works [on Troublesome Creek] thence on across Deep River thence on to the Camberlin Road [sic: Camden SC]

and was discharged for three months service by Colonel Charles Linch, and in the month of sptimber 1781 he was drafted in the regiment comanded by Colonels Calaway & Trig [sic: William Callaway and William Trigg], and joined the Regiment at the Red store in bedford county virginia, and belonged to the

company Comananed by Captain James Bullock then marched through Petersburgh Williamsburgh [sic: Petersburg, Williamsburg] to Yorktown then he was transfered to General [Robert] Lawson Brigade of the Regular line [sic: Militia] and was at the seige and taking of lord Cornwallis [19 Oct] and was

discharged to the best of my Recollection by Col [St. George] Tucker he further sayeth he has lost his discharge and that he has no documentary evidence and that he knows of no person whose testimony he can procure who can testify to his services except his sister she knowing of his goeing into the army and

of his Return, he hereby Relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or anuity exept the present and declares that his name is not on the Pension roll of the agency of any state and further states that he was born in Batimore County state of Maryland in the year 1761 and resided in Bedford county state of virginia dureing the war, thence remooved to the state of Kentucky thence Removed to the state of Indiana Decatur County where he now resides and further states he has no record of his age and his discharged is lost. The amended application of Benjamin Gosnell an applicant for a pension under the provision of congress pased June 7th 1833 [sic]

On the [blank] day of Apreel AD 1833 The said Benjamin Gosnell personally appeared in openCourt at the Apreel Term AD 1833 of the said Decatur Circuit court before which his original application was made and on his oath sayeth that by means of old age and the Consequent loss of memory he cannot

swear positively as to the precise length of his service but according to his best Recollection he served in the united states service Nine Months and further states that he has no record of his age nor does not know that his age was ever recorded and further sayeth that his was Discharged twice by Col Charles

Linch which Discharged was to the best of my Recollection was signed by him, and was Discharged once by Col. Tucker and that his Discharges are lost and that he is acquainted with Col Thomas Hendricks, John Test Jun. Phillip Wethertin, James Johnston esq Samuel Cruitt, John Gullion who can testify as to my varacity and charecter and their belief of my services as a soldier of the revolution

NOTE: On 15 Jan 1855 Dorcas Gosnell applied for a pension stating that she married Benjamin Gosnell on 1 Jan 1815 in Harrison County KY, and he died on 28 Aug 1846. Edy Wheeler, 64, stated that she witnessed the marriage of Benjamin Gosnell and Dorcas Porter. On an application for bounty land dated

3 March 1855 and witnessed by Alexander Gosnell and Richard Robbins, Dorcas Gosnell was said to be about 74.
