Bendix Nelson Dead

About four months ago we noted the departure from this world of Hon. N. L. Nelson of Perley. Yesterday his brother Ben Nelson followed him. He had been sick for only a week. The doctor when first called said it was "La Grippe" brought on by a cold. The next visit disclosed the fact that pneumonia had set it and yesterday at 10 o'clock he expired. Ben Nelson, while of a reserved disposition, enjoyed the confidence of his fellow men and has been prominent in local affairs. In private and public affairs he proved a conscientious, painstaking man, always searchng for the right. Hon. Nelson was a little over 50 years of age. He remained unmarried and consequently leaves no family except for brothers and sisters. A dispatch from his brother P. L. Nelson says the funeral will probably take place Thursday, as we presume, from the Bethania Church. Martin Olson and Nicholi Nelson were here yesterday arranging for the funeral.

Obituary for Bendix Nelson.....

One of the brightest and most able men, Ben Nelson, passed away at 10 a.m., Monday, the 9th, after an illness of seven days which, being a cold to begin with, ended in pneumonia. When told by the doctor that pneumonia had set in that it was death, for the reason that one of his lungs had been injured in a previous sickness some twenty years ago. He said he had worked hard, felt tired and as recovery did not seem possible he gladly welcomed death, as death to him meant rest in heaven and metting with parents, brother Nels and sisters gone before. Ben Nelson sought nothing at the hands of the people, but his ability and honesty of purpose was appreciated and locally since Town of Lee was organized we cannot remember the year that he did not hold some public office or trust. He had a humane heart that bled for the needy and a mind that reasoned and worried for stuggling humanity. His life was a continuous battle royal to earn his daily breat by the sweat of his brow, honestly as a citizen, and for justice and for charity. Ben said he always tried to be a good citizen and a true Christian, but that in the heat of the battle he had to guard against bodily interests quelling those of the soul.

That Ben Nelson had friends was evident by the hundreds that followed him to his last resting place. Such is a model citizen loved and respected in life and missed in life after he has left us. Which is the better life--to be an honest and respected citizen like Ben Nelson, or some selfish, roguish citizen, feared for his evil intentions, holding high places by fraud and gaining riches by dishonesty? We know that you will say we prefer to walk the path of righteousness like our beloved citizen Ben Nelson.

"Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such aside to likes." "Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright; for the end of that man is peace."

Burial took place at Bethania Church, Thursday, Nov. 12, Rev. Krogstad, officiating.
