"Merle" Anderson was born April 17, 1912, on a farm northeast of Perley, MN three miles. He was the youngest of nine children born to Jens Christian "John" Anderson and Martha Sjursdatter Mjolsness Anderson. He had the following siblings: Dena Amalia 3 Jan 1895 – 9 Apr 1988 (Isaac C. McNeilly 3 Jan 1895 – 26 Jul 1961), Emma Josephine 16 Dec 1896 – 20 Jan 1995 (Ernest Lee Good 1 Apr 1895 – 27 Nov 1943), Ruth 22 Jan 1898 – 11 Mar 1972 (Augustenus Valdimar Nelson), Signe Dorthea 13 Oct 1899 – 14 Jan 1943 (Floyd Llewellyn Garrett 15 Nov 1894 – 2 Dec 1974), Joseph Martin 15 May 1901 – 6 Jun 1977 (Ethel Odelia Moe 14 Sep 1913 – 12 Jun 2008), Olga Amanda 8 Mar 1905 – 19 Apr 1966 (Eggert "Ed" Gudmundur Austfjord 18 Jan 1907 – 18 Jan 1987), Sarah Marie "Mary" 28 Dec 1906 – 21 Sep 1993 (John Tate), Ole A. 21 Oct 1909 – 6 Oct 1979 (Vivian Marguerite Payne McDonald 17 Oct 1912 – 6 Oct 1979).

Merle lived at home until he was 21 then he went out working for area farmers such as Carl Aabye, Ervin Sivertson, Oliver Lee, Elmer Sundstad and Ernest Chelstrom. He also worked for his brother-in-law at Cavilier, ND for many years and the American Crystal Sugar Company in Moorhead.

Merle married Lillian Nina Ellingson Hiller 23 Nov 1951. Lillian was born July 27, 1922 at Warren, Cass County, ND. She became the adopted daughter of Martin and Minnie (Jermstad) Ellingson. She had an adopted brother, Howard M. Ellingson (22 Aug 1928 – Living). Lillian grew up in rural Perley and attended school in Borup.

She was married to Elmer Hiller in 1940 and they lived in Fargo. Together they had three sons: Ronald E. Hiller 26 May 1941 (Linda Lee Herringer), Larry Wayne Hiller 8 Dec 1943 (Kristy Elaine Hanson) and Marlowe William Hiller 19 Jan 1947 – 11 Jun 2005 (Sylvia Jean Lott, div.). Lillian and Elmer divorced.

Lillian met Merle Anderson while she was cooking on the Oliver Swenson farm. They lived east of Perley in a house known for years as the Wild Rice Roller Mill and dam house. Lillian did cleaning and housekeeping at the Gardner Hotel in Fargo and for a number of individuals in the Perley area. She worked at the American Crystal Sugar Co. in Moorhead, she owned and operated the M & L Café in Perley and was the manager and cook at the Cenex Café also in Perley. Lillian did in-home support for an individual with paralysis which made her very proud.

Merle and Lillian had three daughters: Susan Marie 7 Nov 1954 – Living (Michael McMorrow divorced), Sheree Kay 26 Sep 1955 – Living (Michael W. Breckel 25 Aug 1954 – Living) and Shelly Fay 1 Aug 1957 – Living.

Merle passed away 8 May 1979 at his home in rural Perley. Funeral services for him were held on Saturday, May 12th at the Kirkebo Lutheran Church, Perley. Pastor Carl Andersen officiated and Mrs. Lloyd Ellenson was the organist. Soloist was Mrs. Roger (Kim) Madson. Casket bearers were Rolf Sundstad, Danny Dosland, Ernest Chelstrom, Duane Hitterdahl, Dan Perrin and Frank Weaver.

After Merle's passing, Lillian moved to Halstad, MN where she worked as a cook at the Halstad Living Center. In 1985 she moved to Moorhead to live, first at Sharpview Apartments and later Eventide Living Center. In May 2012 she moved to the Eventide Lutheran Home. After a hospitalization she was moved to McIntosh, MN, to live in the McIntosh Senior Living Center and be closer to her daughter and family. She passed away August 16, 2012 in McIntosh. Funeral services for Lillian were held Tuesday, August 21, 2012, at the Kirkebo Lutheran Church, Perley, MN with Pastor John Jorgenson officiating.
