Jasper Clayton Ellis went by the name Clate.
The Clate and Sarah Ellis family lived in several places while the children were growing up, including "The Brick" as the house was known because it was one of the few homes made of brick at that time. The children attended Perkins and Ellis schools; and Hopkins, Green Mountain, and Old Friendship churches.
At some point between 1900 to 1910 this family moved back to the farm where Clate, the son of Benjamin "Buck" Ellis and Mary Ann Boatman, had been raised. This farm was northeast of Dawson on Beaver Creek in Van Buren township, Wright county, Missouri.
Clate and Sarah Ellis had only four children reach adulthood, Ina, Ruth, Earl, and Gladys. Three children died as infants, Andrew at age 3 mos 21 dys, an unnamed son at age 8 days, and Mary at age 5 mos 10 dys.
Clate and Sarah Ellis also owned acreage adjoining the Zirschky farm near Bendavis in Texas county, Missouri. Clate gave some of this acreage as a wedding gift to their daughter Ruth when she married Albert Zirschky 19 November 1911.
