Elizabeth Otto was born in 1804 in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, the eldest child of Joseph and Mary (Brown) Otto. As a child she moved with her parents and siblings, first to Angelica, Allegany, New York, then to McKean County, Pennsylvania, where the Ottos were one of the early settler families. She married Joel Sartwell, who also came from an early family of McKean County settlers. In the mid-1850s, Joel and Elizabeth Sartwell moved to Linn County, Iowa.
