Rites Friday For Fred Mauk Town Pioneer
B.F. Mauk, 66, pioneer resident and early day business man of Carnegie, died Wednesday afternoon at the Carnegie hospital after being seriously ill for several weeks.
Mr. and Mrs. Mauk came to the little new town as a young couple early in 1903 and are among the few early settlers who are still living here. He built the first little frame house and after the original town lot sale moved the house onto lots just east of Dr. F.W. Roger's residence on South Deleware. Their eldest daughter, Elma, was the first white child born in Carnegie.
Mauk and J.N. "Jack" Wildman established the first dray lines in town which they operated for about 14 years. In later years he has had farming interests while maintaining his residence in town.
Services Friday a.m.
Funeral services will be held at the Methodist church at 10 a.m. Rev. Leroy Simmons, pastor, and Rev. W.Y. Switzer, Mountain View pastor will have charge of the services. Burial will be made in the Dover cemetery.
Benjamin Frederick Mauk was born June 29, 1879, in Pratt county, Kansas. He was the fourth of a family of 13 children. He was married to Martha Elizabeth Meier March 1, 1901, at Marena, Payne county, Oklahoma. To them four children were born, two sons who died in infancy and two daughters who are now Mrs. Carl C. Garner of Walters and Mrs. Roy G. Chapman of Kaw City. Mr. Mauk has one granddaughter, Johanna Chapman.
Surviving brothers and sisters include Mrs. Anna Nanninga, Lawrence; Mrs. Lula Biles, Falls City, Nebr.; Mrs. Pearl Saunders, Council Grove, Kansas; Miss Laura Mauk, in internment camp, Tokyo, Japan; Mrs. Esther Wilkining, Oak Park, Ill,; Claud D. Mauk, Dover; W.L. Mauk, Eakly; Roy N. Mauk, Oklahoma City; Ira A. Mauk, Carnegie; John E. Mauk, Alta Vista, Kansas, and Dan Mauk, Norfolk, Nebr. One brother died several years ago.
