St. Cloud Daily Times, Wed. Apr. 24, 1918. Veteran Joseph Rieder, an old and respected resident of St. Cloud, who has been ill for several weeks, is now very low. He is unconscious and may not survive during the day. He was a member of Minnesota's gallant Fourth Minnesota in the Civil War.

St. Cloud Daily Times, Thurs. Apr. 25, 1918, p. 4:2. VETERAN OF THE "OLD FOURTH". JOSEPH RIEDER, WHO MARCHED FROM ATLANTA TO THE SEA, MUSTERED OUT. WAS MEMBER OF A REGIMENT WHICH MADE A GLORIOUS RECORD. Joseph Rieder, who for many years had resided at 920 Eighth avenue south, died last night at 11:30, aged nearly 73 years, of a complication of diseases. For some 17 years he resided in St. Cloud, going about quietly, eliciting no attention, unobserved by his fellow citizens, and yet he had served nearly four years during the Civil war, in on of Minnesota's gallant regiments, one which had made a record excelled by few others – the Fourth Minnesota Infantry. Among his principal engagements were Corinth, Iuka, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Altoona, Atlanta and Atlanta to the Sea. While the boys of 1918 are fighting and dying to preserve the republic which the boys of 55 years ago battled to save, this "Boy of 1861" was mustered out. Joseph Rieder, retired farmer, living in St. Cloud, was born June 19, 1845 in Seneca county, Ohio, son of George G. and Marian Schindler Rieder. He was brought to Le Sauk township, this county, in 1856, and lived on the home farm until the Civil war. In 1861, he enlisted in Company G. Fourth Minnesota, Volunteer Infantry, and followed the well-known fortunes of that regiment. After a service of three years and nine months he was honorably discharged. Then, after living a short time on his father's farm, he purchased a place of 140 acres in section 19, Le Sauk township, where he successfully carried on general farming for thirty years. In 1901, he retired and moved to St. Cloud. He became a member of James McKelvy Post G.A.R., and his wife is a member of the Women's Relief corps. Joseph Rieder was married by Father Cornelius Jan. 17, 1871 to Susanna Pung, daughter of Joseph and Catherine Gilles Pung, and is a native of Fond du Lac WI. Mr. and Mrs. Rieder have four children: Mary, John J., Martin and Elizabeth. Mary married Joseph Blommer, and they have five sons. Joseph Blommer died Aug. 11, 1912. John J. married Susan Hoffman and they have seven children. Martin married Elizabeth Sherber, and of their six children five are living. Elizabeth, now deceased, married Adam F. Hiemenz, and had three children.
