John A. Gabe
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church for John A. Gabe, 92, Topeka. He died Thursday, Feb. 26, at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Gabe taught in Jewell County schools until (unreadable*) and had been principal of Jewell County Grade School. he later worked for Montgomery Ward until he retired in 1959. He was a Navy veteran of World War I.
He was born Oct. 22, 1894, near Jewell, the son of James Madison and Abagail (unreadable) Gabe. He was graduated from Jewell High School and lived in the Jewell community until 1938.
Mr. Gabe was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and Veterans of World War I of U.S.A. Jayhawks Barracks No. 1113 at Topeka.
He was married to Margaret Marie Treffer (unreadable) 1923, at Jewell. She survives. A daughter, Margaret K. Gabe, died in 1926.
Other survivors include two sons, Vernon D. Gabe, Littleton, Colo., and John R. Gabe, Oklahoma City; two daughters, (unreadable) A. Horton, Topeka, and (unreadable) Olander, Littleton, Colo.; 19 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Mr. Gabe will lie in state until 9 p.m. (unreadable) at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home. memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 2627 Western, Topeka, (unreadable) or to Salem United Methodist Church, Jewell, 66949.
