Arlene Haukness, 89 of Detroit Lakes, MN formerly of Hankinson, ND, passed away Saturday, September 6, 2008 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN. Funeral service will be Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Hankinson, ND with Rev. David Roehl officiating. Burial will be at United Cemetery, Hankinson. There will be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers are: Elmer Knaak, Curt Luidahl, Tom Luidahl, Nick Oberholtzer, Jason Nickleby & Gabriel Haukness. Organist will be Paul Buckhaus with special music by JoAnn Kuehl & Elmer Buckhaus.
Arlene Haukness was born June 9, 1919 in rural Maddock, ND, the daughter of Garfield & Alma (Sigmunstad) Peterson. She grew up in Maddock and attended country school. She graduated from Benson County Agricultural & Tech. High School. On August 27, 1939 she was united in marriage to Erling Haukness at rural Maddock, ND. In 1940 they moved to Hankinson, ND were they operated Haukness Fairway Foods for 32 years. Erling passed away on March 31, 1997.
Many of their summer weekends were spent at their lake cabin at Detroit Lakes, MN. Arlene enjoyed helping in the store and her children used to sing for weddings and funerals. She was a member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ, the Ladies Guild and community bible study groups.
Arlene is survived by three sons: Rick (Janet) Haukness, Grass Valley, CA, David Haukness, Austin, TX and John Haukness, Texas City, TX; a daughter: Carol (Carl) Oberholtzer, Detroit Lakes, MN; two daughter-in-laws: Diane Haukness, Missouri City, TX and Eve Haaland, Fargo, ND; a sister: Ruby Luidahl, Maddock, ND and 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents: Garfield & Alma Peterson; her husband: Erling Haukness and 2 sisters.
