Robert Edward Grabill, the son of James Floyd Grable and Myrtle Asenath (Simpson) Grable, was born in Vallejo, California where his father worked nearby on Mare Island as an ordnance man for the US Navy. In addition to his parents, he came into the household with an older brother Floyd and his maternal grandparents Robert and Amelia Simpson.

June 3, 1911, Robert and Floyd's mother left the home. On June 20, 1913, the boys' father was killed in a horrible collision of two electric train cars. Floyd was sitting near his father and survived.(See James Floyd Grable's link for information on the tragedy).

Robert and Floyd were then raised by their paternal grandparents, David Henry and Julia Ann (Jeffries) Grabill of Ione, Morrow County, Oregon.(Uncle) Oren Greenberry Grabill, 25, was also living in the house, according to the 1920 Census.

In the 1930 US Census for Ione, Oregon, Robert, 19, was living with his widowed Granddad David H. Grabill, 82, and working as an auto mechanic in a garage.

Robert married Reba Gertrude Hogue, the daughter of Tillman and Nora A. (Brannon) Hogue on 20 June 1931 in Clark, Washington. Reba and Robert had a son, Robert Lee, born on 15 May, 1937 in Heppner, Oregon.

In 1940 Census, Reba, 29, Robert, 29, and Robert Lee, 2, were living with Reba's parents. Robert was working as a tractor salesman.

On 28 November 1951, at their residence in Heppner, Oregon, Reba, her husband Robert Edward, and her son Robert Lee Grabill were baptized by Elvon L. Tull.

In the 1957 City Directory for Pendleton, Oregon, Robert was employed as assistant manager for Empire Machinery. Reba died 18 March 1957.

On 7 April 1958 in Umatilla, Oregon, Robert married a second time to Calverna O. Nelson.
