Death of Mrs. Benjamin Brown

Mrs. Benjamin Brown, a pioneer of Oregon, died at her home at Woodburn last Friday, her 74th birthday.

Mrs. Brown, whose maiden name was Mary Hawkins, was born in Indiana Oct. 18, 1827. She married Benjamin Brown in Rush county, Ind., in 1845, the union being blessed with thirteen children. In 1860 Mr. Brown and family crossed the plains and came to Oregon, passing the winter of 1860-61 on the Abiqua, in Clackamas county, and locating during the following summer at Woodburn, where they have since resided. Mrs. Brown joined the United Brethren church several years ago. A husband and 11 children survive her--Mrs. Barbara E. Robbins of Woodburn, Mrs. Mary J. Baker of Long Beach, Mrs. Minerva A. Whitney of Palouse, Mrs. Emma P. Cochran of Woodburn, Aristo B. Brown of Scholls, William B. Brown of Gervais, Mrs. Sarah D. J. Whitney of Woodburn, Mrs. Cora M. McRae of Portland, Henry D. Brown and Samuel B. Brown of Woodburn, and John M. Brown of Boise, Idaho.

There are also 58 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren, her mother, nearly 100 years old, still living at Kate Station, Ind. and also a sister.

The funeral occurred Sunday afternoon. Services were held at the house, Rev. J. M. Dick, of the Hubbard Congregational church, officiating. The funeral was largely attended. Interment was at Belle Passi cemetery.
