Jon Anson Cooke, 69, of Westfield, New York, died peacefully on August 25, 2011 of kidney cancer in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Mr. Cooke, a CPA, was a prominent civic leader in Chautauqua County, serving on the boards of the Westfield YWCA, Westfield Memorial Hospital, Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation, Westfield Republican Committee, and the Westfield Development Corporation. He had been a member of the Shorewood Country Club, the Town Club of Jamestown, Westfield Mayville Rotary Club and the Grand Island Beer Drinkers and Poker Players Association. He was born October 10, 1941 in Buffalo, New York to Eleanor Jean Anson and John H. Cooke and was raised in Alden, New York. He graduated from Washington & Lee University in 1963, married Melody McCormick of Amarillo, Texas, and moved to Grand Island, New York, where his daughters were born. He first worked as a banker for M&T Bank before founding his own stock brokerage firm, Manley & Cooke. After this firm dissolved in 1972, Mr. Cooke became a broker for Shearson Hayden Stone in Niagara Falls, NY. He received an MBA in accounting from Canisus College in 1982, and passed the CPA exam on the first attempt, receiving one of the top five scores in New York State. After working as an auditor for Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. for several years, Mr. Cooke became associated with the accounting firm Gould & Swanson, and moved to Westfield, NY in 1985 to assume management of a branch office. In 1991, he started his own accounting practice, and was an important member of the local business community until his retirement in November, 2010. He was a natural musician, playing piano and organ by ear, as well as drums, guitar, and the French horn. His renditions of "Up a Lazy River" enlivened many a friendly evening. He was the husband of the late Giovanna "Jennie" Cooke; and is survived by former wives Melody Randall and Bonnie Cooke. He is also survived by his two children, Aprille (Tim) McKay of Ann Arbor MI, and Kirsten Currie of Aurora, IL; and ten grandchildren; as well as brothers, Jeff (Mary) Cooke of Grand Island, NY, Jim (Donna Kassel) Cooke of Alden, NY, a sister, Julie Cooke (Roger Griesinger) of Warren Co., NC; an aunt, Cindy Cooke of Scottsdale, AZ; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held in Westfield, NY on September 17, 2011.
