Joe was one five children born to James Anderson Logan and his wife, Mercy Turner. He was born in the family farmhouse in Jefferson Township, near Laurel (Marshall County), Iowa. He married Mary Alfretta Chase on February 16, 1875 in Havelock (Pocahontas County), Iowa. They had six children; including a stillborn unnamed infant.
