Krauss fought as a private in the Continental Army under General George Washington, whom he greatly admired. In 1802, Krauss built the Cross Keys Tavern, near Harrisville, Cecil County, MD, where celebration of Washington's birthday was a great annual event. The tavern was a stagecoach stop, midway between Baltimore and Philadelphia.

In 1810, Leonard Krauss received his title of Captain from Edward Lloyd, the Governor of Maryland. Captain Krauss had organized a company of militia, the headquarters of which were at his tavern.

Krauss and his wife were the parents of 17 children.
