Mrs. Mary E. Smith, 79, 109 E. Centennial Ave., widow of Eli E. Smith, died at Ball Hospital Thursday after a several weeks' illness. She was born in Delaware County, the daughter of John F. and Elizabeth (Shannon) Black and spent her entire life here. She was a member of High Street Methodist Church and the Muncie Garden Study Club.
Mrs. Smith leaves two sons, Merrill L. and Ervin E. Smith, both of Muncie; a brother, Eugene Black of Tampa, Fla.; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lucille Smith Cassell of Muncie; five grandsons, Chief Engineman Jerry Smith of the U.S. Navy, Honolulu; Phillip, James, Gregory and Patrick Smith, all of Muncie; and nine great-grandchildren.
Her husband died in 1948.
The funeral will be at Meeks Mortuary at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Rev. Harold D. Neel, pastor of High Street Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Black Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary after 3 p.m. Saturday or any time before the services Sunday.
