Polly Mariah Burk was born January 18, 1817 in Danby, Vermont to John Burk Jr and Betsy (Green) Burk. Polly was the seventh of nine children born to the couple. Her siblings included Betsy (b. Mar 18, 1804), Martha (b. circa 1805), John Spencer (b. circa 1806), William Green (b. circa 1809), Aurelia J (b. Jun 28, 1812), Nelson Perry (b. Jan 17, 1814), and Electa L (b. May 1, 1821). A ninth child (unidentified daughter) is believed to have been born circa 1825. The first seven children were born in Vermont, while the last two were born in New York.

Polly married first, John Marshall Whitwell (a merchant) on February 14, 1836 in Leoni Michigan, and the couple had at least one child (Frances Marshall) who did not survive her first year (d. Dec 1, 1840). John Whitwell died from an accidental horse kick on May 2, 1840 and is buried in the Grass lake Cemetery next to the daughter he never knew.

Polly married second, Amos W Gillett (a miller) circa 1843 in Grass Lake, Michigan, and the couple had four children, including Ann (b. circa 1845), David (b. circa 1849), Frances Ella (aka Francella) (b. May 1852), and Myron (b. circa 1855). Amos was born in Ontario New York in 1817 and died in Steuben, Indiana in 1901.

Polly and Amos divorced in 1865 in Grass Lake, Michigan, after which Polly returned to Meridian, New York. Polly died of Pleurisy on March 2, 1867, and is buried in Meridian Cemetery in Meridian, New York.
