Ernest Leroy Garlitz, 83, Meyersdale, died Oct. 15, 2011, at his home. Born Oct. 10, 1928, in Elk Lick Township, he was the son of the late Albert Ernest and Nellie Marie (Hemmings) Garlitz. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Joshua Shuck. Mr. Garlitz was a heavy equipment operator with Operating Engineers Local 66. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of the Earl H. Opel Post 459, American Legion and Walker-Harris Post 8826, V.F.W., both in Salisbury. He was a member of Meyersdale Church of the Brethren. Surviving are two sons, Gregg E. Garlitz and wife, Nancy, Meyersdale; Brad K. Garlitz and wife, Tammy, Salisbury; two daughters, Brenda L. Kern, Buena Vista; Carol M. Shuck and husband, Harry, Meyersdale; two sisters, Alberta Shumaker and Rita O'Neil, both of Meyersdale; 15 grandchildren, Isha Cosgrove, Brianne Spurlock, Robert Kern, Melissa Kabina, Gregg Garlitz Jr., Amy Sharp, Nathan Garlitz, Geoff Garlitz, Tim Garlitz, Kyle Garlitz, Jessica Shuck, Jason Shuck, Vannessa Maust, Gabrielle Garlitz and Cody Garlitz and 12 great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Inc., 9168 Mason-Dixon Highway, Salisbury from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 on Tuesday. Services will be conducted in the funeral home at 3 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Pete Kaltenbaugh officiating. Interment will be in Salisbury Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by Earl H. Opel Post 459, American Legion, Salisbury.
