Alberta Jean (Garlitz) Shumaker, 84, of Meyersdale, PA, died Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville, MD.
Born November 29, 1929, in Boynton, PA, she was the daughter of the late Albert Ernest and Nellie (Hemming) Garlitz.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, John Calvin "Jim" Shumaker on May 13, 2007; and her brother, Ernest Leroy Garlitz.
Mrs. Shumaker was a 1947 graduate of Salisbury Elk-Lick High School and had worked for the Salisbury Undergarment Company. She was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening and growing flowers.
Alberta was a member of the Salisbury Church of the Brethren where she sang in the choir and was a deaconess.
Surviving are her daughter, Carlene Shumaker and wife, Connie Glessner, Berlin, PA; her two sons, Wade Shumaker and wife, the former Jane Blume, Spruce Creek; John C. Shumaker, Jr. and wife, the former Elizabeth Elliott, Portland, OR; her two grandsons, Morgan J. and Roland H. Shumaker and her sister, Rita O'Neil, Meyersdale.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Inc., 9168 Mason-Dixon Hwy, Salisbury, PA, on Tuesday 2-4 & 6-8 p.m.
Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Daniel Whitacre officiating.
