Hougas Torosian was born in Tomarza, Asia Minor, the Ottoman Empire to Haroutune (Artin) Torosian and Margaret Hougasian. Per his grave, he was the first Armenian to emigrate from Tomarza to the United States, arriving at Ellis Island in October 1896 and moved to the midwest. He was living in Chicago in 1905 when he became a naturalized citizen, and must have moved to Milwaukee soon after. In 1907 he married widow Zarouhee Chavooshian Kapeghian of Philadelphia and she moved with him to Milwaukee. They had two chidlren, a daughter Margaret and a son Harry.
