Benedikt and his brother, Anton, immigrated from Justingen, Wurtemburg, sometime around 1850. They first settled inear Dorchester, Allamakee County, Iowa. Shortly after their arrival, his wife, Walburge, died, leaving him with an infant son, Augustus.
Benedikt was then married Maria Kumpf, another Wurttemberg immigrant, who also had recently arrived in Iowa with two brothers.
Sometime after 1880, the Ecks moved to Codington County in South Dakota where they lived for the remainder of their lives. Their move was probably accompanied by several Eck, Kumpf, and Schwarzhoff relatives.
