John Alexander was the son of Charles (1780-1842) and Mary (Berteaux) Alexander (1798-1863). He is named in his father’s will written 3 Sep 1840, which was filed in D.C. Probate court 25 Oct 1842.

John married Sarah Ellen “Sallie” Pettit 3 Jan 1850. Their marriage was announced in the Daily National Intelligencer 05 Jan 1850, p.4: “In Georgetown, on the 3rd instant, by the Rev. Mr. Flannagan, JOHN ALEXANDER, of Washington, to SALLIE E., daughter of RICHARD PETTIT, of the former place”. The marriage was also recorded in Holy Trinity Church Marriages 1806-1871: “1850, Jan 4th. Married John Alexander to Sallie Pettit both of D.C. Witness: Father Lynch, Benjamin Sewall, Peter B. O’Flanagan"

John and Sallie Alexander were the parents of two children:
Charles R. Alexander (1851-?), and Mary Berteaux Alexander (1853-1927).
Both children are named as grandchildren in the Wills of their maternal grandparents, Richard Pettit and Mary Ann (Herron) Pettit.

John possibly remarried after Sallie’s death in 1858. His obituary refers to the mother of his children as his “first wife”.

His obituary appeared in the Critic-Record newspaper, 21 Nov 1881, p.3:
“Suddenly at 6 a.m., 20th instant of heart disease, Mr. John Alexander in the 59th year of his age. Funeral will take place from his residence, No.811 Fourteenth street northwest, Tuesday, at 2 p.m. Friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend”
And also on the same page of the same paper:
“…Yesterday morning Mr. John Alexander was added to the (list of deaths). The deceased had been sick for a couple of days, but feeling much better yesterday arose from his bed about 6 a.m. and proceeded to dress. Suddenly he fell prostate to the floor and died within a minute. Mr. Alexander was a native of France, but his parents came to this city when he was a child. He was, for many years, an upholsterer and amassed a handsome competence, retiring from business about six years ago. He was widely popular by reason of his generous nature, genial disposition, and true friendship to his friends. Mr. Alexander leaves a son and daughter by his first wife. His funeral will take place at 2 o'clock tomorrow from his late residence on Fourteenth street adjoining Foundry church, and the remains will be interred at Mount Olivet Cemetery”. (Note: Foundry Church was located at 14th & G Street in until 1902).

Note: John Alexander's obituary states he was a native of France, but all other records (all census records and death certificate) give his place of birth as Washington, DC. His father's 1842 obituary stated the family came to Washington from France 25 years prior to the father's death (about 1817).
