Burns, was a 40 year employee at Auburn. He died from complications from diabetes.
Barnes was a PE teacher who coached many sports at different levels throughout his time at Auburn. His two varsity stints were as head boys' basketball coach from 1977-1982 and varsity football coach from 2001-2002.
Barnes led the Knights to a 78-49 record in basketball, with his best season in 1978-1979 when Auburn went 26-4 and won a section A1 championship.
His niece said his passion was for sports and the kids that he taught and coached. "That's all he ever talked about when he came home."
Barnes was a 6'3" standout for Stephen Decatur High School, leading his team to a state championship in 1962. Barnes made a freethrow with :06 remaining in Stephen Decatur's 49-48 win againast Chicago Carver.
The all-stater who finished with 1,473 points went on to play for the University of Wisconsin, where he set the school's single game scoring record with 42 points against Indian in 1965.
"He was a strict teacher but a great man." - commented an Auburn graduate and basketball player.
