"Wife of J.B. Mitchell"

Grave recorded in 1956 by the Chief Tusquahoma Chapter D.A.R. for the series "Louisiana Tombstone Transcriptions", Volume I, Page 191.

Grave recorded between Alley Mitchell and Lillie Worthey.

Online family trees state her full maiden name as Josephine Mary Thankful Anderson, the daughter of William Nicks Anderson and Talitha Stow. She married Philip M. May in Union Parish August 31, 1843. They were the parents of Alexander, Philip, JR., and John Willis. Philip was a member of the LA State Legislature. Philip died January 17, 1849 in Union Parish and she remarried to John B. Mitchell in Union Parish August 14, 1850. They were the parents of Mary Pauline and Talitha E. Josephine. John B. Mitchell died December 28, 1868 according to Union Parish probate records.

Josephine is seen with her second husband on the 1850 Union Parish Census with her three boys, all listed as Mitchel.

She is seen on the 1860 Union Parish Census as J.M.F. Mitchell. Children in the home: M.P. (Mary Pauline) and Josephine, along with W.T. and Susan Mitchell, her husband's brother and mother.

On the 1870 Union Parish census she is apparently widowed and living with her son Philip S. and his family under the May name. She was counted again in the household of her sister and brother-in-law, the Wood family.

She was shown on the 1880 Lincoln Parish census in the household of William T. Mitchell, listed as a widowed sister-in-law. William and his wife Cintha T. Mitchell are buried in New Hope Cemetery, Lincoln Parish. Could this be where his brother John B. was buried?

She is shown on the 1900 Ouachita Parish census as the widowed head of household. She was the mother of five, but only one was still alive.
