Thomas was the third child born to Dr. William Nicks Anderson, and his second wife Margaret Ann Hayes. He was born in the Indian Territory (Arkansas) where his mother later past away.
His father married Susanna Louisa Dixson in 1847, after moving to Navarro County, Texas. The Dr. was murdered by Colonel William Love over a land dispute in 1855, so Thomas's step mother Susanna ended up raising him. On June 13, 1866, Thomas married Clarissa "Clara" Jane (Roberts) Crabb, who bore him three children, John W, W.T., and James Madison Anderson. James seems to have been the only child that lived to maturity.
