SOMERS, Conn. — Joanne Yando Peters, 82, of Somers, Conn., passed away Wednesday, Sept., 28, 2011, at her home, surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Hospice.

She was born May 27, 1929, in Malone, N.Y., the daughter of Bert and Stella Arquette Yando.

On July 26, 1952, she was united in marriage to Stanley Peters at Notre Dame Church. The marriage ended in divorce in 1993.

Joanne graduated from Franklin Academy in 1946. After graduation she was employed by the New York Telephone Co. in Malone as an operator and supervisor in the traffic department, before transferring to the telephone business office. She later moved to Somers, Conn., and was employed by Southern New England Telephone in management.

Joanne traveled to many towns and cities throughout southern Connecticut training other employees. She retired after an employment of 40 years of service in New York and southern New England phone companies.

She was a communicant of All Saints Church in Somers, Conn., where she served as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. Joanne volunteered many hours for the church office. She was a consecrated vowed Third Order Member of the Order of Most Holy Trinity (Trinitarians).

Joanne's hobbies included reading, music, gardening, crewelwork, many types of handicrafts, jigsaw puzzles and the outdoor beauty of nature. She enjoyed watching the numerous birds she fed and could name all the different kinds that visited her yard.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Maureen Peters of South Hadley, Mass.; two sisters, Shirley Yando Morris and Carol Yando Higgins, both of Malone; one brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Gracia Yando of Morrisonville, N.Y.; two step-grandson, Christopher and Patrick Larivee of South Hadley, Mass.; along with many nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins.

Her parents; a brother, Armand J.Yando; and a brother-in-law, Tim Higgins, predeceased Joanne.

The family will greet friends at 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Notre Dame Church.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, in Notre Dame Church.

Burial will take place in Notre Dame Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to St. Mary-Murphy Funeral Home, Inc.
