Irma Jewell Wells was born June 12, 1902, in Ackerman, Mississippi (Choctaw County), daughter of Christopher C Wells (1873-1917) and Nannie Barksdale (1874-1916.

The 1910 Federal Census for Ackerman, Mississippi (Choctaw County) shows Irma Wells, age 8, born in Mississippi; and living with her father, Christopher C. Wells, a farmer, age 36, born in Mississippi; and her mother, Nannie, age 35, born in Mississippi. Also living in the household were Irma's siblings: Clara, age 6; Irene, age 4; Willic C., age 2; and Rosa L., age 5; all born in Mississippi.

Irma's mother died August 13, 1916 and was buried in Ackerman, Mississippi. Irma's father died the following year on February 26, 1917. They were both buried in the Bethel Cemetery in Sturgis, Mississippi (Oktibbeha County).
They left behind a number of young children.

Irma first married Herbert David Weeks. The 1920 Federal Census for Beat 5, Mississippi (Choctaw County) shows Irma Weeks, age 17, born in Mississippi; and her husband, Herbert D. Weeks, age 22, born in Mississippi. Living with them was their son, Clifton, age 11 months, born in Mississippi. Also living with them were Irma's five siblings: Clare M., age 15; Cordie A., age 10; Willie C., age 11; Rosalie, age 9; and William S., age 4; all born in Mississippi.
