Sarah was the daughter of Rev. Bazzel Ward and Cassandra Ford Ward. She married William Fletcher Stevens 6 Feb 1854 in Ohio Co. KY. The couple moved first to Gibson Co., IN and in 1870 to Sedgwick Co., KS. Sarah died in April 1871 shortly after the birth of her seventh child George W. who died four days after his birth and a week before his mother. Of her other children, Isaac R., Priscilla A., Charles W., Martha L., Samuel M., Arthur C., three of them, Isaac, Charles and Arthur also died young.

Although her tombstone says she died at age thirty, the following statement from a biography of W. F. Stevens says the following,
"He was visited with a sore affliction in the death of his wife, which occurred the following year, 13 May 1871, while she was still a young woman, being but thirty-eight years of age."
