Former Wichitan Dies at California Home
S. M. Stevens, Sedgwick County settler and former Wichita clothing merchant, died last Wednesday at midnight at his home in San Francisco. Mr. Stevens came to this county in 1870 settling on a farm northwest of Wichita. He attended the public schools in Wichita and was graduated from Garfield College, now Friends University. He later taught school in this county.
Later Mr. Stevens entered the clothing business under the guidance of W. W. Luttrell, one of the pioneer clothing merchants of Wichita. He was a local clothier for many years. Nine years ago he moved to San Francisco with his family and had been engaged as a traveling salesman until his death. He married Miss Beatrice Hoath of this city. Mrs. Stevens is a wholesale buyer in New York City.
Mr. Stevens is survived by his wife; three children, Ruthelma, Virginia, and Billy; his step-mother, Mrs. Amanda Stevens, Wichita; three brothers, Guy, Art and Frank, all of Wichita; and two sisters Mrs. Mattie Little, Maize, Kas, and Mrs. Priscilla Merkle of Norman, Okla. No arrangements have been announced.
