Bernard Francis Mackin was born on July 17, 1895, in Marion County, Kentucky, to William Joseph Mackin and Louise Magdalene "Lula" Anderson. He was the eldest son in a family of several siblings.
He fought in World War I as a member of the 67th Battery (field artillery) and was honorably discharged as a Corporal at the end of the war in 1918.
In 1922, Bernard married Lillian Elizabeth Gyr in Indiana. Together, they had two daughters, Norma Jean Mackin and Margaret Laverne Mackin.
Bernard worked as a foreman at the Louisville Cooperage Company, where he later became chief engineer.
His life was cut short when he passed away on December 31, 1941 at age 46. He was interred at St. Louis Cemetery in Louisville on January 3, 1942.
