William Albert immigrated to the United States from Germany as a young man, said to be about 14 years old at the time. Some members of the Albert family remember that he was said to be a stowaway. His son, William Henry, recalled that his father told him that he washed dishes in restaurants when he first arrived in the United States, and he did not speak English. In some unknown year prior to receiving his American citizenship, he changed his surname from either "Albretch" or "Albrecht" to "Albert." No one in his surviving family knows his original German surname for sure. He received his United States Certificate of Naturalization on September 16, 1926 in Silver City, Grant County, New Mexico. The certificate states that he was 68 years old, 5', 6" tall, blue eyes, and gray hair. The naturalization papers state that he was 68 years old in 1926, which would make is birth year 1858. His grave stone (installed by his son, William Henry) was engraved with his birth date as 1855.

William Albert and Elizabeth Minerva (Shatto) Albert also had two young daughters who died in a tragic fire in Waxahachie, Texas, said to have started when ther clothes caught on fire in the front of a fireplace. No surviving family members know their ages when they died, nor is there currently any information regarding their names, dates of their births, or their place of burial.
