"U.S. Land Patents Recorded
. . . Merenciana Biscarro (widow) – W 1/2 of se 1/4, sw of ne 1/4, se 1/4 of sw 1/4, sec 1/4, twp 19 s, r 1? E, 160 acres."
According to family lore - Merenciana was cheated out of her land by some men who told her that she was selling some mineral rights. She evidently spoke only limited English and after the swindle refused to talk in English ever again - so she was said to only ever speak in Spanish from that point on for the rest of her life.

All Doubts Set At Rest
On June 6, 1897, William Villa and Merenciana German were married at this place [Gonzales] by Rev. Father Ferrer. When the license was precured the fact that the woman was the widow of Alfred Biscarro, Who died January 6, 1896, was omitted therefrom. As some doubt existed in the minds of the priest and the contracting parties as to the validity of the marriage ceremony a document called a declaration of marriage was on Monday filed in the Recorder's office of this county which sets at rest the doubts of the parties concerned."
