Eva Julia Stevens Norton, 95, died peacefully Monday (April 2, 2002) at the Glastonbury Health Care Center. She had most recently lived at Cedar Mountain Commons in Newington. She was born November 19, 1906 in New Fairfield, the first of ten children of Ernest J. and Millicent (Chase) Stevens. She was married January 19, 1927 to James Walter Norton. A resident of Newington since 1933, she once saved as a member of the Board of Education. She had been president of the Elizabeth Green School PTA; she was named an honorary president and member of the school's PTA in recognition of her leadership in having Northeast School renamed to honor Miss Green. As a faithful member, she served as Deaconess of the Church of Christ Congregational, president of its Women's Fellowship, leader of her circle and chair of uncounted dinners, receptions and banquets. She was a 66 year life member of the May Davis Stotzer American Legion Auxiliary Unit 117, a past president, District officer, member of the past Presidents' Parley and the 8/40. She was also a member of the Newington Centennial and Bi-Centennial Committees. She was a Charter Member of the Newington Historical Society and had belonged to the Republican Women's Club. In the 30's and 40's she appeared in numerous plays presented for her church, the veterans' hospitals and civic events; more recently she was in the Centennial Pageant. Before her marriage she was employed by Seth Thomas Clock Co of Thomaston. During World War II, she worked at Hanson Whitney, West Hartford. She was employed as school cook at the Green School. From 1958 until 1971 she was employed by Hartford Hospital as a Unit Secretary. She raised fruits, vegetables and flowers, sharing her bounty with friends, as well as creating jams, jellies, relishes and pickles. She filled orders for her bread, cakes, pies, and many special occasion cakes. Kakee, as she was known to her family, was predeceased by her son James, Jr. in 1940, her husband in 1956 and her daughter Shirley Norton in 1995. She is survived by her daughter Eva and husband Robert of Glastonbury; her five grandchildren, Nancy of Canton. Janet and husband Mark of Culver City CA, Richard and wife Michele, Glastonbury, Barbara and husband Patrick of Jenkintown PA and Robert and wife Lisa of Tolland. Her nine great-grandchildren are Bethany of Canton. Ben and Alison , Kathryn , Erin and Thomas and Mackenzie, Luke and Casey. Also surviving are her sisters Mildred of Newington and Jean Handfield of Willimantic and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are Sunday. April 7, 2-5 p.m. at the Newington Memorial Funeral Home, 20 Bonair Avenue. The funeral will be Monday, April 8, 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ, Congregational, 1075 Main Street, Newington. Gifts in lieu of flowers may be made in her memory to Church of Christ, Congregational, 1075 Main Street, Newington 06111 or to the Helen and Harry Gray Cancer Center Valet Service, 100 Retreat Avenue, Hartford 06106.
