U.S. Senator. After graduating from the Chambersburg Academy in 1858, he studied law, then took a position with the Pennsylvania Railroad Company and later became assistant superintendent of the Cumberland Valley Railroad. He was in the grain business at Hagerstown, Maryland and with the advent of the Civil War he served as a volunteer Union Scout during the Confederate invasions of Maryland and Pennsylvania. After the war, he relocated to California and was a member of the board of supervisors of Santa Barbara County, (1868-73). He also was one of the commissioners appointed to organize Ventura County and director of the California State Board of Agriculture, (1886-87). In 1899, he was elected as a Republican to the United States, serving until 1905. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he retired from politcs and lived on his estate until his death at age 73.
