Valda died in a car crash after a day of Christmas shopping. Her mother, Lena C. Hucks & sister, Amaryllis Hucks Smith also died in the same crash (several children were also injured). A triple funeral was held on Christmas Eve 1964 for all 3 women. (there were 3 white caskets lined up in front of Salem Bapt. Church). Burial followed in the church cemetery.
