"One branch of our family claim that the Travis family came from Wales, while others strongly assert that they came from England. The oldest family record that we can find is the one that heads this record. Tradition says that three brothers came together to America. One of these three was Daniel Travis, our ancestor. He was one of the five brothers, whose names were said to be Isaac, Joshua, David, Daniel and Gilbert, and there were several sisters whose names have been forgotten. It would be interesting to know the circumstances that lead them to emigrate, whether they came for religious liberty, financial interests, or political reasons, and many minor details.

It is said that they did not remain long where they first stopped on account of their religious views. They could not worship in peace, so went elsewhere. They were Baptist in religious faith, as far back as anything is certainly known of them. They are supposed to have settled first in Westchester County, NY. Tradition also says that they took up nine hundred acres of land, the brothers staying together awhile and then separating. As near as it can be determined Daniel Travis moved to Dutchess County during the Revolutionary war, and settled on a farm in the township of Stanford about the year 1780. The farm now owned and occupied by John G. Travis, a great grand-son, is supposed to be the farm he settled on. There was a dispute about the claim and after the death of Daniel Travis, the farm went into other hands for a few years. His son, Gilbert Travis, bought the place in 1812, and received the first clear title that was ever given.

Daniel Travis was twice married. His first wife was Amy Weeks; the second Jemima Griffen, a Quakeress. They raised a family of twelve children, three dying young, whose names are not recorded. (See Record, page 1.) Of these twelve children, there are only two, Richard and Gilbert, that we know much about. Gilbert always lived in Stanford, and his descendants have always lived in Dutchess and Columbia counties. Richard moved around more and his descendants are mostly in Michigan. Daniel Travis and his wives are supposed to be buried in an old cemetery at Bangalls in the eastern part of the township of Stanford."
